Calling for innovations in the production and processing of aquatic foods that maximise nutritional and economic benefits to local communities

Blue foods – fish, invertebrates, algae and aquatic plants captured or cultured in freshwater and marine ecosystems – have traditionally been undervalued in their contribution to global food systems. Yet they are incredible sources of locally produced nutrition for millions of people. In late 2021 there will be a call for global action on food system transformation in the UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS). The Blue Food Assessment (BFA), a scientific assessment of blue foods and their potential to contribute to sustainable and just food systems, reveals gaps where innovation could meaningfully bolster the blue food ecosystem.
We are launching this Innovation Challenge to find solutions which can support global food systems to produce nutritional, sustainable, and economically viable blue food.
UpLink Ocean is accepting submissions from 25 May – 22 June 2021.
The Blue Food Challenge is launched in collaboration with Friends of Ocean Action, and supported by Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions and WorldFish.
