UV Treatment Case Study

La Feria, Texas water Treatment Plant uses UV to Reduce Chemicals Because Decreasing Water Quality from the Ro Grande

An $800,000 system of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation will go into operation next month as part of a $15 million water and sewer project funded through the Texas Water Development Board.

The system uses ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms while cutting the soaring cost of chemicals used to treat water, City Manager Sunny Philip said yesterday.

Philip said the UV system better treats water coming from the Rio Grande, whose water quality has declined amid growth along the U.S-Mexico border.

“This is a process of sterilizing water to make it one step safer for the community,” Philip said. “It sterilizes any microorganism not typically caught in the filter system.”

R.P. Constructors of New Braunfels will complete the system’s installation next month, City Secretary Esmeralda Sanchez said.

“There are still some final checks we need to perform,” she said.

Philip said the UV system will better treat water whose source is the Rio Grande.

The Rio Grande’s water has declined in quality as industrial and population growth have soared on each side of the river, Philip said.

“As the area has grown, the quality of water we get from the Rio Grande has diminished quite a bit,” he said.

Philip said the UV system will allow the city to reduce its use of chlorine — traditionally used to treat water supplies — by about 15 percent.
