The deep groundwater in the Vojvodina region in Serbia is heavily polluted (in places at over 20 µg/l) by toxic arsenate(III) and also highly alkaline and rich in humic matter. The tap water there thus exceeds the EU drinking water limit values for arsenic and faecal indicators by a factor of almost 20 and exposes the region's population of well over half a million inhabitants to the risk of liver and kidney damage.  Following the business cooperation between German and Serbian Governments, both Governments made available financial sources for comprehensive water quality investigation programme, which served as a basis for preparation of Pre-Feasibility Study and Basic Design, delegated to Joint Venture TZW-IK Consulting Engineers - Ehting. Process with bank filtration, followed by conventional water treatment appeared to be the most promising alternative to obtaining drinking water from the groundwater.
