Clay(NOM(Humic(Fulvic)))

Published on by

Hi everyone, after some important suggestions over the past week or two, and some intense literature reviews to include the membranes' autopsy results, I have decided to propose that the foulant causing the irreversible membrane fouling from the 1st pilot study is a natural organic matter(>92%). Consequently, the source water is from a clay environment, and further narrowing things down it might be humic and/or fulvic acids (reference Mr. peeters). However, I am looking for recommendations including literatures on coagulants/flocculants that will help prevent and mitigate this fouling upstream the UF. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

  1. hello Raphael. I don't know about the conditions of your pilot test, but did you analyse the water quality before treat it in the UF system? So, to be sure about the organic matter you have to analise TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and see the specification of the membrane manufacturer about this maximum concentration of this parameter. to remove organic matter you should try to oxidate it by aeration or with chemicals. You can also try to remove it by adsorption in activated carborn, but it is expensive, I gess.... Well, good luck on your project. Regards!
