STOWA DOCUMENTARY: LEVEES AND DROUGHT - INSPECTION IN THE NETHERLANDS

Short documentary about the inspection and maintenance of dykes and levees under severe drought conditions using laserscanning and water spraying.

In Holland we have so called boezem-dykes: these are dykes around old water ways where the surrounding land has subsided. So the waterway is above the land - sometimes up to 6 meters. The waterways are in between two boezem-dykes. Usually situated in peat-land areas these dykes consist or are build upon peat soil, which is very susceptible to droughts. In the unusual dry spring of 2010 these dykes had to be kept wet by spraying. Using laserscanning subsidence of more than 20 cm of the top of the dykes was measured.
