$20 Mil for Water Research Center at Syracuse

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Announced that the State Has Awarded SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry $20 Million to Build Science Labs and Classrooms Along Onondaga Lake's Inner Harbor

ESF is partnering with Onondaga Community College to createthe SUNY Water Research and Education Center. The money will come from phase 3 of the New York SUNY 2020 Challenge Grant program. The 2013 state budget included $55 million to fund phase 3 of the program, according to this year's executive budget.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announces a $20 million grant to build a SUNY water research center at Syracuse's Inner Harbor on Sept. 16, 2014 in Syracuse, N.Y. Standing next to Cuomo is Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. The water research center will be run by SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry in partnership with Onondaga Community College.

With the designation, parts of the Inner Harbor will qualify for theStart-Up NY, the state'stax-free program for new businesses. Under the program, qualifying businesses can be exempt from state property, corporate and income tax liability for up to 10 years.

The proposal calls for a 34,000 square-foot building, with docks, a floating classroom and a 4,000 square-foot exhibition hall highlighting the history of the region's Native Americans and the industrial history around Onondaga Lake. The building would be built to the gold standard of the U.S. Green Building Council, with technology to reduce energy and water use and carbon dioxide emissions.
