2012 World Food Prize for Strides in Irrigation

Daniel Hillel, 82, was awarded the honor last week at the annual Borlaug Dialogue symposium in Des Moines. His receipt was announced in June by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who said, "Dr. Hillel's work will become even more important as we grapple with how to feed the world's growing population…if we're going to strengthen food security, we have to get more out of each drop."

Decades ago, Hillel developed a system of micro-irrigation agriculture, which exposed crops to small amounts of water in systematic doses. The technique helped conserve water while nourishing produce, a crucial feat in arid regions of the world. The system redefined the way plants were grown in areas of the Middle East and Africa.
