Abengoa Receives Order to Construct the Largest RO Desalination Plant in the World

Abengoa , the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructures, energy and water sectors, has received the order to start early works, in a consortium with the engineering and construction company SEPCOIII, by the company leader in the development, investment, ownership and operation of energy generation and desalinated water, ACWA Power, for the engineering, supply and construction of what will be the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world and will be located in Taweelah power and water generation complex, 45 km north of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The project is valued in an amount higher than 700 MUSD, with Abengoa’s part of approximately 243 MUSD in the next three years.
With a capacity of 909,000 m3/d, it will guarantee supply to the city of Abu Dhabi throughout the year and will be the first large scale desalination plant in the emirate that combines the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy, thanks to the installation of a photovoltaic solar field of more than 40 MWp of power. Thus, it will be possible to reduce, in a sustainable way, the energy demand of the desalination plant.
Specifically, the scope of the project includes the collection of seawater, pumping, pretreatment, reverse osmosis system with energy recovery, post-treatment, pumping station, product water storage, effluent treatment, discharge by outfall and field solar photovoltaic, as well as the associated electrical installations that comprise the construction of an electrical substation of 132/34.5 kV.
This project, located on the Persian Gulf coast, is part of United Arab Emirates government plan to encourage private participation in the development of the country's infrastructure. The desalination plant will have the capacity to supply approximately four and a half million people.
With this order, Abengoa is consolidated as a leading company in the desalination sector worldwide, with an installed capacity of 1.5 million m3/d, which will be expanded to 3.7 million when the portfolio under execution is completed. In addition, Abengoa strengthens its presence in the Middle East, where it is currently executing the Rabigh III desalination plant, of 600,000 m3/d, and Shuaibah III desalination plant, of 250,000 m3/d, in Saudi Arabia, and the Salalah desalination plant, of 114,000 m3/d, in Oman.
