AbTech develops new stormwater management technology

AbTech Industries has developed anti-microbial stormwater treatment technology Smart Sponge Plus to reduce the amount of pollutants and debris that are carried to waters through stormwater drain pipes.
The technology helps remove pollutants such as sediment, nutrients, pathogens, petroleum compounds and floatable debris from stormwater prior to exiting the outfall pipe.
Nassau County executive Edward Mangano and legislator Donald MacKenzie have announced the installation of the technology to restore health to the area's waterways and beaches.
Edward Mangano said that stormwater runoff is the biggest threat to the quality of the county's waterways, fishing areas and beaches.
"This new initiative is a major step forward in protecting our environment, as it helps remove debris and other pollutants before they enter our waterways, accumulate on our beaches and harm marine life," Mangano added.
As part of a pilot programme, an outfall pipe in Bay Park will be outfitted with the technology. More outfall pipes will be outfitted upon receiving federal funds.
