Airtel Kenya has partnered with Rotary Club of Nairobi East for a safe water harvesting project that will provide clean drinking and cooking waterin Kajiado County and the neighbouring community
It is estimated that worldwide, 500,000 children die every day from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related diseases. Within certain communities in Kajiado, children spend up to four hours a day walking up to 15 kilometres to their nearest water source. This eats into valuable learning time at a critical point in their development.
Access to clean water a basic human right, and an essential step towards improving living standards and the safe water harvesting project seeks to provide safe and clean drinking water for the school as well as the neighbouring community, saving them the agony of walking long distances in search of water.
In a statement, Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi noted that Airtel is a brand that is close to the heart of many Kenyans and partnering with the Rotary Club of Nairobi East is a unique way to make a positive impact in community. "We attach great value to partnerships that work for the good of the community in the true Airtel Spirit of community development. This partnership with the Rotary Club of Nairobi East will go along way in improving the livelihood and health of the Enkeriyan community through access to clean drinking water," said El Youssefi.
The Rotary Club of Nairobi East is also organizing a team of 47 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro on 2-7th January 2015 with the objective of raising money for various charity projects one of them being the school's safe water harvesting project. The climbers who are CEOs of different multi-national companies, journalists, entrepreneurs, bankers among others are drawn from various countries around the world which include Kenya, Japan, Turkey, Nambia, Canada and South Africa.
While thanking Airtel for its support in the project, Carole Kimutai, President of the Rotary Club of Nairobi East said, "We would like to thank Airtel for its support towards this initiative. With the project seeking to provide clean water to schools, you'll be giving the gift of education. Students who have clean water will stay healthy and stay in class, instead of walking miles every day just to collect dirty, unsafe water. You will change lives by breaking the cycle of poverty."
