Alstom has won a contract worth about €58m to supply equipment for the 600MW Karuma hydropower project in Uganda
French transport and energy infrastructure specialist Alstom (EPA:ALO) said it had signed a EUR-58-million (USD 64.8m) contract with Chinese Sinohydro to provide electro-mechanical equipment and technical services to Uganda's largest electricity plant, Karuma Hydropower.
Under the agreement, Alstom will provide six 100-MW turbine-generator sets and related equipment. Alstom Hydro China will design and manufacture the equipment, and will supervise its installation. It will also commission and test the sets, and provide on-site services.
The Karuma power station is the country's largest hydropower project with a capacity of 600 MW. Once effective, the plant will provide 40% of Uganda's power supply.
This is Alstom's third contract awarded by Sinohydro, following the successful cooperation within the Bui hydropower project in Ghana and Soubre in Cote d'lvoire.
