American Water Recognized for Excellence in Corporate Responsibility

VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--American Water(NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, today announced it has been selected toCorporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine's100 Best Corporate Citizen's List,which ranks public companies based on outstanding corporate responsibility performance in 2013. Additionally, American Water was selected to theNYSEEuronext Vigeo US-50 Index, which is composed of the 50 most advanced U.S. companies with the highest-rank as evaluated by theagency in terms of their performance in corporate responsibility.

American Water ranked #80 on the 100 Best Corporate Citizen's List in its first appearance. This is the 15th year for the list, whichdocuments nearly 300 data points of disclosure and performance measures - harvested from publicly available information in seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance, and philanthropy. The list ranks companies on the Russell 1000 Index and is governed by aRatings and Rankings Committeeof theCorporate Responsibility Officers Association.
The Euronext Vigeo US-50 index was launched inJuly 2013by NYSE Euronext and Vigeo to promote and support responsible investment. The index distinguishes companies achieving the most advanced Environmental, Social and Governance performance. Companies contained in these indices have achieved the highest score, as determined by a review of nearly 330 indicators. Ratings are based on 38 criteria.
