Are Dams Outdated or Still the Best Way to Manage Water Resources?

At a conference on water management and climate change held in Thailand this week, water management agencies stated that dams and large-scale irrigation projects remain the authorities’ first choice when it comes to preventing floods and drought.

Asian government officials present at the event are sticking to traditional methods when it comes to the sustainable division of limited water resources, as well.

However, environmentalists are warning that, instead of relieving the negative effects of climate change, dams and large-irrigation projects only cause further damage. Their opinion is that dams only intensify the already heavy pressure on the ecosystem. The discussion was held at "Asia’s Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Sustainable Development Goals” forum.
