Beer Byproduct Could Help Treat Wastewater

Wastewater process optimization specialist Cole Sigmon's idea to use brewery waste to help speed up the process
The City of Boulder is in talks with a local brewer to help solve a wastewater problem.
State and federal regulations require the treatment plant to reduce the amount of nitrogen in the water it treats. To do this, the plant needed a new food source for the bacteria that help clean out that nitrogen.
Sigmon approached Avery Brewing with the idea, asking if the city could use leftover weak wort, the sugar water left over after brewers extract sugar from grains.
Boulder will build a holding tank on Avery's new brewery property in Gunbarrel. The city will then truck the water from the brewery to its wastewater facility.
Boulder officials say the move will make the process much more efficient and save the city more than $50,000 each year.
If the plan is approved, the plant could begin using the material as early as the fall.
