Beer from Sewage in Portland

More than a Dozen Home Brewers in Portland, Oregon, Are to Stop Using Tap Water to Make their Beer and Use Treated Sewage Instead. The Experiment, Taking Place This Summer, Is Part of a Competition by Clean Water Services (CWS) to Highlight Different Uses for Its Recycled Water
According to a report by KGW, the sewage is treated using a special purification system to make even cleaner than drinking water.
Thehigh-purity water system uses ultra-filtration to filter the water through very small pores, as well as reverse osmosis for passing the water through a membrane that blocks chemicals from getting through. The process also entails enhanced oxidation, which uses ultraviolet light and an oxidising chemical to break down contaminants.
The Department of Environmental Quality allows recycled water to be used for drinking purposes, but only if it goes through a specific process that includes approval from state and national agencies, as well as a public hearing. State officials told KGW the brewers are following this process, said the report.
Last year, Clean Water Services arranged a brewing competition that involved making beer with 30% treated wastewater
