This is not new. It is well known that there is an immediate large increase of microbial counts after and during biofiltration. This is no surprise because the intent of the biological process is to encourage microbial growth as part of the process to reduce some TOC and other chemicals that are biodegradable. These are typically not pathogens, but is is obviously important to disinfect the water at the next stage. Disinfection is more important then analytical measurements.
