The Brazilian textile industry has cut the use of water in production by 90% over the last ten years due to modern technologies, new research has revealed.
According to the Brazilian Association of Textile and Clothing Industry (ABIT), the use of water in textile production to produce 1kg of fabric has fallen from 100 litres to ten litres in the last decade.
ABIT developed the Selo Qual certification, which demonstrates the compliance of a product in terms of how it is produced, with the goal of turning sustainability into a business strategy for textile companies.
Among the available technologies used to reduce water usage in the textile industry are Dye Clean, wastewater treatment and the treatment of effluents.
ABIT president Rafael Cervone said: "In the textile and clothing industry, the costs of water and electricity are very relevant. Therefore, we had to adapt to a global reality, which includes changes in the production process, economic and environmental issues.
"Those who have not adapted, eventually became bankrupt."
