Brazil's cities ministry earmarks US$2.6bn for waterworks in 2015
Brazil'scities ministryhas set a 2015 budget of 7.5bn reais (US$2.59bn) for water and sanitation works to be carried out through national unemployment insurance fund FGTS, according to the country's official gazette.
To be reserved for credit lines under the country'sSaneamento para Todos(Sanitation for All) program, a total of 5.7bn reais has been earmarked for the public sector and 1.8bn reais for the private sector.
For the private sector, a maximum of 20% can be used for industrial water and wastewater treatment and water reuse, according to a notice in the gazette.
Receiving the most is the southeast region. Approximately 2.33bn reais has been assigned to the public sector and 738mn reais to the private sector. In the northeast, the breakdown is 1.49bn reais and 470mn reais, respectively.
Budgets for the remaining regions are: south (788mn reais public and 249mn reais private), north (593mn reais and 187mn reais) and midwest (495mn reais and 156mn reais)
The state reserved the most, nationwide, is São Paulo. It has been earmarked 1.42bn reais, equivalent to 19% of the 2015 budget.
