Theme Note: Selecting Pumps & Valves for Water/ Wastewater Treatments & Distribution Systems – November 2018 Issue

Increasing economy, rising middle class and expanding infrastructure and a vast agricultural hinterland are contributing to the water challenges in India. Climate changes such as draught conditions in many arid states, depleting ground water levels at this pace is likely to increase the demand for pressure booster and deep well submersible pumps to draw water from greater depth. Depleting groundwater levels, decreasing supply of uncontaminated water and unreliable monsoons increase the demand for water pumps. The low availability of water and the increasing demand for delivery and treatment of water will give a boost to the water-treatment industry and in turn the demand for pumps. The rising consumption and decreasing supply of uncontaminated water is pushing up the market of desalination plants for treating seawater, in which pumps play a major role.

The urbanization of the country has witnessed over a billion migrations from villages to major cities thus creating a pressure on existing infrastructures including delivery of utility water after removal and treatment of wastewater. Also the government likely to increase its spending on infrastructure projects like irrigation and drinking water schemes. This would give a boost to the pump industry and the demand for specialized and efficient pumps will increase. A stable economy, coupled with continuing investments in the core sectors, is expected to fuel the growth of the pumps & valves.

The Indian Pump industry is growing at an annual CAGR of ~10%, which is higher than the international CAGR average of ~6%, due to the surge in infrastructure development, growth in agriculture and other water intensive industries. The pump industry offers the highest net value additions in the engineering industry of over 20%. Moreover, the domestic market for Indian Pumps is growing at a healthy rate of 16-18% per annum. Rapid growth of the Indian chemical market has stimulated the demand for high quality industrial pumps. The growing demand for lower cost of operation and zero downtime pumps gives India a competitive advantage to offset the labour cost advantage offered by low-cost/low-quality manufacturers in some Asian countries.   It is estimated that the Indian valve industry in the organized sector is worth more than Rs 900 crore, while the unorganized sector accounts for Rs 500 crore. The growth rate of the industry is approximately 15%. Urbanization is expected to cater 70% of the India’s US$ 15 trillion projected GDP by 2030. This entails Pumps & Valves for urban construction such as residential and commercial utilities & buildings will witness sustained demand over considerable period of time.

Our November 2018 issue will be focusing varying pumping requirements in water or wastewater treatment plants and distribution systems. The selection of a pump for a particular condition should be approached with as much information as possible about the conditions under which it will operate. We would like to invite you to share your experiences in the form of articles, technical papers and case studies with our readers. Please inform us of your intent to contribute at the earliest, so that we can evaluate the articles for the publication.
