CAWST's Brittany Coff is in Nepal and has provided this update about the work being done by CAWST's WET Centre partner there, ENPHO (Environmental and Public Health Organization), as part of the response to the devastating earthquake.
I spent today at the ENPHO office, assisting them with making Piyush chlorine solution, which is being distributed to help people treat their water. They are very busy working on the disaster response.
Their main activities are:
- Training and managing volunteers to deliver water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) awareness messages in camps. The volunteers are going out to places throughout Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur) where people who have lost their homes are camping. They are teaching people about hygiene and point-of-use options for staying healthy during the crisis. The ENPHO team has already trained and mobilized over 100 volunteers.
- Making and distributing Piyush chlorine solution, so people can treat their water. They are managing many volunteers to make and package the chlorine. The team prepared over 4,000 bottles of chlorine today (Thursday). ENPHO is for the most part distributing the chlorine to organizations working in affected areas. Tomorrow (Friday) the ENPHO team will also be making hand sanitizer solution as well as continuing to produce Piyush chlorine solution.
While ENPHO is working to support the emergency response, they are also planning longer-term WASH activities in response to the earthquake. This could include such actions as the distribution of Point-of-Use (POU) water treatment kits with information and chlorine, and training for volunteers about how to make temporary toilets.
That's the update for now. The ENPHO staff members are safe, and their office is too. Everyone is committed to supporting the disaster response. I will be back at the ENPHO office tomorrow helping them make more chlorine and hand sanitizer.
