Royal HaskoningDHV and TechForce Innovations Contracted for Coastal Protection Projects on Three Maldives' Islands
A Grant Agreement has been signed between the Government of the Republic of the Maldives and the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to implement a project aimed at remedying the coastal erosion faced by the populations of Gn.Fuvahmulah, S.Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo and S.Feydhoo.
Minister Abdulla Jihad signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of the Republic of the Maldives whilst His Excellency Ambassador Louis Piët signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Client Consultancy Agreement for this project was signed by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim and Mr. Jean Henry Laboyrie, Director Global Rivers, Deltas & Coasts of Royal HaskoningDHV.
The Agreement signed today marks the commencement of the development phase of the project. The works will be executed by a consortium of Royal HaskoningDHV and TechForce Innovations B.V. The costs are covered by the Dutch ORIO grant. After approval of the project plan (result of the development phase), the implementation and operation & maintenance phases will start which involves the actual construction activities. If all goes to plan these phases will commence in 2016.
Half of the implementation and operation and maintenance phase will be financed by the Dutch ORIO programme. The remainder will probably be covered by a loan. The costs for the development phase, which was signed today amounts to €762,878, while the entire total of the project costs are estimated at € 19.5 million.
This project aims to protect threatened shorelines in Gn.Fuvahmulah, S.Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo and S.Feydhoo for the benefit of the people of the Republic of the Maldives.
