Coca Cola Has Donated Money to The Nature Conservancy's Fund Aimed at Preserving Kenya's Water Towers
The Nairobi Water Fund, which was launched by TNC in a public-private partnership, will be used in saving water towers across the East African country.
"This project will begin by addressing conservation problems in the Tana River Water Basin," Business Daily quoted Munira Bashir, programme director at TNC Kenya, as saying.
About 90 percent of water used domestically and industrially is sourced from Tana Basin. The basin is also the supply source to five dams in Kenya, that are responsible for 60 percent of electricity generated in the country.
Bashir therefore stressed the importance of conservation, noting that if the ecosystem is not conserved and basins like Tana are affected, "more than five million Kenyans depending on it will suffer."
The environment is being destroyed from anthropogenic activities such as farming along water bodies, deforestation and rampant irrigation practices that consume large volume of water.
While hinging on the importance of conservation, the project will focus on the reduction of the quantity of water consumed by small farms, adopting efficient irrigation technologies. Communities who degrade the Tana Basin through the activities that generate income for them will also be offered alternative livelihood sources.
