Acciona Sees Desalination Boom in Chile on Mining, Desert
Acciona SA, the Spanish developer of clean energy, wind and water projects, is predicting a boom in the demand for desalination plants in Chile as the copper mining industry expands.
The company plans to bid on contracts to build municipal desalination plants to supply cities with potable water and units to provide supplies to copper mines, Diego Pini, a director for Acciona's Infrastructure unit in Chile and Peru, said Wednesday in an interview.
Demand will increase from 2016 onwards as mining companies resume activity on new projects and as the government offers contracts to supply desalinated water amid a fifth year of drought, Pini said. "It's going to take off," he said. "We see an intensive use of desalination in the north of Chile."
Alcobendas, Spain-based Acciona opened its first wind farm in Chile last month as part of plans to build 255 megawatts of renewable capacity there and started operating its biggest photovoltaic plant in South Africa the previous month.
