Device Tracking Root-zone Water Balance
Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network in Technology
The Wisconsin Irrigation Scheduling Program helps producers track the water crops receive in order to ensure adequate water in the crop's root zone
At the 2014 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, growers were able to take a first-hand look at the program and were able to have hands-on experience using the web-based tool.
John Panuska, University of Wisconsin-Extension natural-resources specialist at UW-Madison, demonstrated the program at his irrigation-water-management exhibit, showing its ability to help growers optimize crop-water-use efficiency by tracking the root-zone water balance.
Panuska provided information about the benefits of using the program's water-balance predictions, along with root-zone soil-moisture monitoring, to allow growers to plan irrigation timing and amount. They would then be able to take maximum advantage of natural rainfall while minimizing over-application of water.
