Water scarcity is an issue affecting countries, communities and families all over the world. One in eight people don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. Eighty-eight percent of diarrheal cases worldwide are linked to inadequate and unsafe water. These cases result in 1.5 million deaths each year, mostly among children under age five. Based on these circumstances, in late 2006, Dow, along with The United Nations Foundations, The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC), Cargill and Wallace Genetic Foundation, funded and launched the Global Water Challenge (GWC), an organization dedicated to building awareness and promoting scalable actions in expanding coverage for clean water and sanitation worldwide.
The GWC is a unique non-governmental organization (NGO) that brings together the private sector and some 20 leading development and water NGOs to promote collaboration and new and more sustainable solutions for providing drinking water and sanitation. Since its inception the GWC has drawn on the experience, expertise and technology of Dow and its 23 global members to create partnerships that are far more capable than any one organization could be at accelerating the delivery of safe water and sanitation throughout the world.
As a charter member of the GWC, Dow combines the creativity of its employees with its technological expertise to provide innovative solutions to help supply cleaner and safer water to those in need. Specifically, Dow has created lower-cost desalination technologies, more effective ultra filtration systems, materials to improve the sustainability of water infrastructure, sustainable business models for small community water system and innovative ways to increase awareness of the issue.
