Published on by Esther Rasenberg, Water News Europe in Government
The European Commission proposes to add norms for new and emerging substances to the new Drinking Water Directive.
Legislation for substances like Legionella, chlorate and PFOA and PFOS have to improve the quality of drinking water in Europe. EU-commissioner Frans Timmermans presented the proposal of the revised Drinking Water Directive on the 1st of February in Brussels.

Good day and thank you Esther. This is good but why not also acting at the source of the problem. Many products (e.g. detergent) can be replaced by non pollutant ones. Why is the EU authorising the production and sales of products ending in wastewater and so difficult to treat that recycling is expensive and not carbon efficient?

That is a very relevant question, Valerie. Let's hope the EU Parlement will put this forward.
