Everglades legislation passes House 114-0

A House Bill guiding the future of Everglades restoration passed Friday afternoon, two days after Rep. Matthew Caldwell, R-Lehigh Acres, and environmental groups made several changes to the draft version.

Caldwell's bill (HB 7065)originally called for lowering agriculture tax rates and capping the amount of money the industry could be liable in the future. Then-critics said the bill would shift the burden of ridding the Everglades of pollution from the polluters, in this case agriculture companies, to the taxpayers.

Instead, Caldwell's bill will generate millions of dollars for Everglades restoration and actually raises farm tax rates between 2017 and 2036.
