Expert: How to Produce Water and Food in Arid Regions
Published on by Jake B in Technology
Dubai-based Sanctum Consult's CEO Craig Beeson talks about a long-term solution for water and food production.
Beeson told MEP Middle East that the Swedish based company United Science & Capital strives at a swift implementation of two technological solutions called Desert to Green and Aqua Tower.
He said that the solutions have the potential to solve the fresh water and food production in a long term way.
Talking about Desert to Green, he said: "Desert to Green is a package of technologies where modified natural zeolites plays the central role. The zeolites act as the water and nutrient carriers for soil and plants. The use of modified zeolites reduces the need for irrigation and increases the microbial life in soil, which makes it possible to grow and transform arid areas into forest and agricultural land at a fraction of the water compared to what is otherwise required."
On Aqua Tower, he said: "Aqua Tower is a system for production of desalinated water and electricity. It is a patent pending technology that utilizes hot air from the atmosphere or various waste heat sources. It will have an annual water desalination capacity of up to 1-billion m3 of water."
He added that in countries with high water shortages, the implementation of Desert to Green and Aqua Tower will "not only solve the problem of water desalination for current use but will make many of these countries self-sufficient in food production".
Beeson claimed that the interest for both Desert to Green and Aqua Tower is far reaching in many countries and regions with prevailing freshwater shortage.
Beeson's complete views will appear in the 1209 issue of MEP Middle East's special report on Water Technology, which will be out on the first week of September 2017.

Some known clean technologies for the integrated solution of water and products in arid regions
Water saving
1.The technolody for productions flexible porous pipes for self watering when growing plants in arid places. Water saving up to 50%.
2. Bio-engineering techology for recycling of biodegradable waste (food waste and other) into compost, fertilizer, feed of animal with using wastewater instead of water. Water saving up to 100%.
3. Technologiy for cultivation and processing of resistant plant. Production of drinking water
1. The technology for high-temperature gasification MSW and other waste into energy, pure water and other products.. Other technologies are also possible.

These countries also consume a lot of natural gas to produce electricity. Power plants are only 45% energy efficient which means that there is a lot of hot combusted natural gas going up the chimney into the atmosphere as Wasted Energy.
With our Sidel SRU Flue Gas Condensers we can recover that heat energy from the exhaust. This recovered heat energy can be used to heat and or cool large ranges of commercial greenhouses. In these greenhouses food crops can be grown, which also creates a lot of full time jobs. The world never has to much food.
For every 1 million Btu's of heat energy that is recovered from the combusted exhaust and is utilized, 117 lbs of CO2 is not put into the atmosphere. These numbers become big numbers hourly. This is how to reduce CO2 emissions.
In every 1 million Btu's of natural gas that are combusted are 5 gallons of recoverable water and this distilled water is very useable. This also adds up to be a lot of useable water.
Dubai Aluminum is just 1 example of a company that produces a lot of electricity because it needs a lot of electricity. So much could be done at this facility to produce the heat energy needed to produce food crops, and cooled CO2 for crop enrichment and water for cooling plant needs or for irrigation purposes. There is no need for all this waste!
