Fertilizer Company Will Eliminate Phosphorus From Products

The Brattleboro Reformer (VT) (3/26, Weiss-Tisman) reported Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, America's largest marketer of consumer lawn products in the country, stated they will "remove the phosphorous from most of its lines of lawn fertilizers by the end of 2012" in order to alleviate concerns about the runoff entering the Chesapeake Bay. The Reformer notes, "Phosphorus runoff can cause toxic algae blooms in fresh water and Vermont has been trying to cut down on the amount of phosphorus that makes its way into Lake Champlain and other water ways." Rep. David Deen, D-Westminster and Chairman of the Fish, Wildlife and Water Resources Committee, is looking to reform the amount of phosphorus in Vermont water, introducing "a bill this year that would prohibit the application of fertilizers with phosphorus."
