The Federal Ministry of Environment in Nigeria Has Launched a National Digital Flood Model for Better Forecasting and Monitoring of Flooding Nationwide
Following the flood threat in the country and the need to contain the situation, the Federal Government has launched the National Digital Flood Model.
This new approach was adopted in relation to the 2012 flooding whose effects and destructions across all sector and economic activities, were N1.48trillion and N1.1trillion, respectively.
While launching the project, on Tuesday, in Abuja, the Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam said the National Digital Flood Model was specifically developed for improved monitoring and forecast nationwide, to ensure effective environmental governance and prompt response to impending flood disaster.
She, therefore said "the model permits interaction between predicted hydro-meterorological data and earth surface conditions such as land-use and soil type to derive runoff which displays in 3- dimension GIS environment".
Also speaking on the challenges of this model, Mallam said: "however, the challenge to the use of this model is for it to be adopted in flood management service delivery in the country."
The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rabi Jimeta, however said that the administration was committed to ensuring a sustainable quality environment, devoid of perennial havoc, occasioned by flood menace.
