An excellent article. One major problem we have experienced is that most people believe a test result if it was what they expected, or worse still, what they want. We manufacture water analysis field test kits and we are aware of most of the possible interferences as design chemistries to cope with same. However, it can never be 100% guaranteed and we often request the company to send a sample of their products to ensure tests work in their presence or we can modify test procedures to remove any problems. You did mention test strips but we have found in most cases these only work in what we call "Clean Water Conditions". As soon as water treatment chemicals are added, the test strips are useless. We tested test strips for copper and iron in a domestic central heating system treated with a molybdate based inhibitor. The limits were 0.5ppm copper and 5ppm iron. The test strips did not respond to any copper below 32ppm, and iron, 25ppm.
