First Potable Reuse Demo Plant in Europe uses Trojan UV AOP

This innovative pilot project will provide the Costa Brava region with a water regeneration system that enables resilience and a guaranteed water supply in the face of drought. The region currently uses UV to reuse and purify wastewater for things like agricultural irrigation, industrial and recreational uses, street cleaning and water main cleaning.

The new pilot plant construction was completed in December 2024 and became fully operational in January 2025, testing and analyzing treated wastewater to ensure feasibility and safety. The facility is currently testing an advanced treatment train that purifies six cubic meters of water after treatment at the Roses wastewater treatment plant. It uses processes that include disinfection with monochloramines, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis (RO), oxidation, UV light, active carbon filtration and remineralization. The ultimate goal of the pilot project is to further increase the quality of recycled water for greater reuse applications, like indirect potable reuse.

The completed plant construction is the first stage of AIGUANEIX’s project for water purification and leverages their innovative research background to adapt to climate change. The objective for this pilot project is to evolve to a full-scale installation in 2027. The plant design could represent the future of wastewater treatment and water purification to ensure a guaranteed potable water supply for Spain’s population. It also expands the environmental uses of reclaimed water, including aquafer recharging, creating a natural reservoir of potable water. Additionally, this is a preventative measure to combat intrusion of seawater in the aquafer, improving the quality of water available to the region.
