First RO desal plant in Qatar
Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network in Technology
Qatar is to build a new water desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology, the first of its kind in the country
Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) will develop the $500mn plant which will produce 36 million gallons per day (136,000 m3/d) by the third quarter of 2016.
The contract was awarded following a tender, the Penisula reported citing a statement on the website of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
Mitsubishi has been selected as the contractor to build the plant at an unnamed location.
This is the second major contract the Japanese engineering company has won in Qatar in quick succession following reports last week that it bagged a deal worth in excess of $1bn to build a 2,400MW and 130 million gallons per day (492,000 m3/d) power and water production plant.

It is not clear when the RO plant was awarded, but it seems that commissioning by the third quarter is 2016 is rather ambitious. As for the power plant of 2400 MW and an assumed cost of 500,000,000 $ it seems that the the unit cost of 208,000 $ per MW is on the low side, Is it possible to know what type of generation (steam turbines or gas turbines) and the unit output.
