A New Type of Surface Water Filtration System Planned for Bessey Creek Provides a Model for Reducing the Amount of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Carried from Watershed Streams into the Indian River Lagoon
New technology in Martin County will help pump cleaner water into the Saint Lucie River and Estuary. State and local leaders broke ground on a state of the art Hybrid Wetland Treatment Technology Project in Palm City.
Water from Bessey Creek will go through a water treatment system, which will decrease the phosphorus in storm water runoff up to 95 percent.
WaterShed Technologies, whose over the project, has several other treatment plants in Florida. Commissioners said this will help the county meet state water quality standards.
Anne Scott, a Martin County commissioner said, "After our lost summer of 2013, we are all in heightened alert and have renewed our commitment to do whatever we can to improve the water quality."
The project cost 3 million dollars, which is funded by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The plant is expected to be up and running next year.
