Food Security and COVID-19: Impacts and Resilience in Singapore

Across the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted food supply chains and threatened food security. Singapore is highly dependent on food imports and has an open economy that exposes it to volatile global markets, so it is acutely vulnerable to the effects of the pandemic on other countries, the effectiveness of measures taken by foreign governments to combat the spread of the virus and overall disruptions of international trade links. Proactive and reactive steps have been taken to protect Singapore’s food supply chains against the adverse impacts of COVID-19. In this paper, we discuss food security in the city state, the impacts of COVID-19 in the population, the local production, and imports from two main trade partners: Malaysia and China. We conclude by acknowledging the complexity of achieving food security under the very difficult circumstances.

  1. Very nice paper on the follow-on consequences of CoViD-19.

     

    Here in California we are facing long term water shortages potentially caused by what climatologists and paleo-climatologists are projecting to be a climate change induced "megadrought".  Thus, California farmers are already leaving expanses of agricultural land fallow/unplanted, reducing the size of cattle herds, etc.    Inasmuch as California is a major supplier of agricultural products to the world, this will also cause further shortages and price increases as the drought progresses.

    Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world where more than 7,000 companies have invested. It has a hot and humid climate and on the other hand it has no mines and minerals. Therefore, the economy of this country cannot be in recession!

    However, to prevent the Quid 19 virus, measures can be taken and the food chain can be adjusted based on certain foods. On this basis, hot foods should be used, as well as daily consumption of fish, shrimp, etc., walnuts. Pistachio. Hazelnut. Almond. Sesame and dates are required in the daily schedule.

    Also, using some medicinal plants in the form of tea such as thyme, peppermint, Olibanum (Boswellia) and daily washing of the nose and throat in two new ways with dilute salt water (such as saline) will be very useful.
