GS Inima Enviornment S.A., one of the world's leading water treatment company, secured a 69.4 million euro (US$93.9 million) deal to build a desalination plant in Tunisia, the firm's South Korean parent company said Wednesday.
GS E&C, a leading builder in the country that acquired Inima in 2012, said its Spanish subsidiary sealed the Djerba plant order by forming a 50-50 consortium with water management company Aqualia S.A. The order was placed by Tunisia's water resource management corporation.
The contract marks the first time GS has ever entered the North African country's construction market. Its share of the project stands at 34.7 million euros.
The project calls for processing 50,000 tons of sea water into fresh water at a resort in southern Tunisia.
GS Inima, with its Spanish partner, will be in charge of drawing up the designs, procuring materials and building the plant.
The latest deal comes after the subsidiary was put in charge of building two desalination plants in neighboring Algeria.
GS E&C said that the latest order gives it a good position to bid for the upcoming Sfax and Zarat desalination projects in Tunisia. Orders for the projects are expected to be placed after 2015.
