To ease their access to clean water and improve sanitation, Guinness Nigeria Plc has âdonated 10 boreholes to 10 communities across three local government areas in Cross River State.
At a press conference in Lagos, Wednesday, the company announced that the donation was part of the company’s programme to promote improved hygiene and sanitation for the communities in Abi, Bekwarra, and Obanliku local government areas.
â”Every new water project we commission, we announce the capacityâ of even more Nigerians to improve the quality of their lives,” said Sesan Sobowale, Corporate Relations Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc.
“Since our flagship water of life programme was launched about 10 years ago, we have constructed water facilities in 25 communities across 14 states in Nigeria. And with the additional 10 boreholes we are announcing today, we have a total of 35.
“We are pleased to know that through these water projects, Guinness Nigeria has helped thousands of Nigerian families access clean waterâ and ultimately improve their overall heath and well-being.”
The pilot project, done in partnership with Concern Universal, a Calabar-based nongovernmental organisation, focused on participatory rural development, âis expected to help 6,000 people have access to clean drinking water.
About 63 million Nigerians lack access to clean water, and over 100,000 children under the age of five die yearly from diarrhoea, according to the World Health Organisation.
â”Records show that âcommunities that lack access to safe and clean water witness the highest incidence of deadly diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, and typhoid,” said Mr. Sobowale.
“By enabling more Nigerians to have access to clean drinking water, we play an important part in reducing the disease burden of beneficiary communities.â”
Guinness Nigeria’s partnership with Concern Universal supports the Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Nigeria, RUSHPIN, programmeâ by providing access to safe water in villages that have achieved open defecation-free status in Cross River State.
