Helendale's New Water Purification System

High Desert Manufacturing Company Partnered up with Two Inventors from Alaska to Create Thousands of Portable Water Treatment Systems

In the far reaches of Alaska, Gerrit Vreeman, 16, and his father, Fred, constructed an ozone treatment system that removed harmful and aesthetically displeasing features from water.

While researching the global water situation, Gerrit Vreeman found that 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have safe water. His research let to an intense passion to invent a purification system.

Constuble said Gerrit became interested in ozone treatment when he discovered a high amount of iron in his water storage tank. With the help of his father, the young scientist began constructing the project for a science symposium. Gerrit discovered that the system could be implemented relatively easy in many kinds of water holding tanks.

"The system is pretty simple, very cost-efficient and it could be used to help a lot of people," Constuble said. "Contaminants in their water include metals and other inorganic compounds, organic chemicals and various microorganisms."

They began raising money through Kickstarter, an online fundraising service that helps get creative projects off the ground.

The water systems includes the O3 System Mini, and the O3 Mega unit for larger containers of water.

Constuble said the project will come together with Fred's innovative engineering skills, and with Constuble's know-how as a mold builder, machinist and manufacturer.

According to the project website, Gerrit is applying to Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and other tech schools.

Constuble said he's excited about the Kickstarter project because creators can work directly with developers to produce a product, while contributors kickstart the project with funding.
