Harmful algal bloom is an increasing threat in fresh water lake shores as well. In Lake Erie basins along north west Ohio, USA, water treatment plants have been facing challenges to supply acceptable quality water to its communities during summer and fall seasons when water becomes warm and conducive to algal growth. Water treatment plants are recognizing the need to upgrade their treatment units to bring down the algal toxin in finished water to within the health advisory limit of 0.3 ppb for microcystin.
