Lucknow: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation is planning to adopt German technology for regular cleaning of drains in the city. The technology will help LMC remove conveniently small plastic pieces, solid wastes, stones, bottles, polythene bags, etc from drains and sewer lines, thus enabling smooth flow of sewage.
There are many localities in Lucknow which perennially face problems of choked sewer lines due to improper cleaning of solid wastes, stones and plastics flowing in sewage. At many places, people have diverted drains into sewer lines resulting in blockages at many places.
The technology called 'Huber' provides a mechanical screen which can be installed in the sewage treatment plant and also at the gates of barrels from where drains flow into the river. The screen efficiently removes waste products from the water. This machine is being used by Delhi Jal Board and Ahmadabad Municipal Corporation.
LMC says the technology will tackle problem of shortage and absenteeism of workers as the drains will get cleaned automatically and timely. Complaints regarding blocked drainage system often start piling at LMC's office as soon as monsoon approaches as the blockages often result in water logging causing inconvenience to people. "The technology can be of great help during monsoons," said P K Srivastava, additional municipal commissioner.
