Huge Water Project in Tanzania

The Government Has Embarked on a Multi Milliondollar Water Project in Mtwara Municipality to Meet the Projected Industrial Demand in the Municipality

The agreement signed in Beijing, China, on January 10, 2015 between the government of Tanzania and Chinese Railway International Group Company Limited will guarantee implementation of the Mtwara-Ruvuma River Water Supply Project in the next few months.

Shortly after arriving from China where he led the government delegation, the Minister for Water, Prof Jumanne Maghembe, informed the 'Daily News' in Dar es Salaam that in the next ten years Mtwara municipality would be supplied with 100 million litres of water a day from the current supply of 8 million litres.

"Implementation of the water project estimated at 320bn/- will be accomplished in less than six months after commencement and the project involves installation of high-tech infrastructure for reliable water services to the industrial flourishing Mtwara metropolis and the neighbourhood," Prof Maghembe explained.

According to the minister, the source of supply which is 70 kilomtres away is the Ruvuma River and production and distribution of water will also benefit 21 villages located along the route.

"Ongoing construction works of industries in Mtwara coupled with rapid population growth, calls for the improvement of water services to the convenience of the population.

For example, after completion of the cement industry, said the minister, the plant itself will require three times (24 million litres) the volume consumed at the municipality at the moment which is 8 million litres a day," the minister clarified.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, Mr Mbogo Futakamba, on behalf of the government, signed the agreement with president of the Chinese company, Dr Lu Bo.

This is the company that built the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, TAZARA, in the early 1970s. Funding of the project at the tune of 189 million US dollars (about 320bn/-) will be in the form of a joint venture as the government of Tanzania will commit 20 per cent of the cost (about 40bn/-).

The rest will be received from China as a soft loan with a repayment period of between 15 and 20 years. There will be an eight-year grace period.
