Undoubtedly, hydropower will play a great role in changing the energy matrix of Eastern Europe. It is destined to improve energy security & efficiency of the region, to replace depreciated and carbon-intensive power generation thus reaching sustainable energy goals and high environmental EU standards.
In general, most of the hydropower capacities in the Balkans were developed before 1990, and to date hydropower accounts for about 50% of region’s installed capacity. Thus, apart from greenfield hydropower projects, reconstruction of depreciated HPPs should be put in place.
It is obvious that the further tapping of hydro resources should strictly stick to high environmental standards with minimal effect on the environment. This requires high-end technologies and solutions which would mitigate all the risks to the fullest.
