Improving Predictions and Management of Hydrological Extremes

In the H2020 funded project IMPREX (= IMproving Predictions and management of hydrological EXtremes) a “serious game” was developed, where the player (as incident commander in a flood forecasting centre) has to save a city from flooding using probabilistic forecasts and making the right kind of decisions.

  1. Hey Trudy; games are fun--- for children. Adults use games to ignore their responsibilities. The "model" is only needed if you plan on doing nothing to police yourself and your community.  For great innovators I tip my hat to those that use nature as a guide. Do their best to copy that process. Making forecasting models and still do nothing to mitigate the flood or its overall destruction seems counter productive.  Remember local weather can be affected by man using nature's tools. In this case trees and microbes.  You may recall natures purpose for trees. They regulate: floods, clean air, modify temps for areas, provide materials to build a society and so on.  Remember your hydrology class? "the average size tree respires up to 300 gallons of water a day".  This is why professionals know "rain comes from nature, floods come because of man".  Making models of what man does or should not do is a genuine goal. Making a model of natures rain patterns .  for the farmers;; something is wrong when you out to feed the cows and paint the barn. when you come back the hay is in the barn and the cow has been painted. I think another look at this innovation is warranted.   Take care Trudy

    1. Hi Guy, I respectfully disagree. Games serve a purpose for general awareness also for some adults who are not familiar with core concepts. Many city government elected officials may get an idea or two that prompts them to get further informed. Yes, this is a simple game, but one based on solid core principals. it is not meant for hydrologists or many experienced water professionals. We offer different levels of knowledge sharing and I find value in continuing to do so.
