Indian-Americans Honored With European Prize For Ultraviolet Purification Of Water

The website IndiaWest.com (6/7) noted that Indian-Americans Ashok Gadgil and Vikas Garud were honored with the 2011 European Inventor Award, "Europe's most prestigious innovation prize," for "their pioneering work of employing ultraviolet light in the purification of water." Gadgil is from the University of California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, while Garud works for WaterHealth International. Their "UV disinfection device requires only a 40-watt UV light bulb to disinfect 1000 liters of water per hour" and "has been installed in more than ten countries worldwide, delivering clean water to over two million people."
