Indonesia Targets Population Access To Clean Water By 2019

The Indonesian government has set a target of providing its population access to clean water and sanitation by 2019, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
Under the National Mid-Term Development Plan, the country will need more than Rp660 trillion (US$57.2 billion) in the next five years to upgrade safe water infrastructure and carry out sanitation projects.
Imam Ernawi, a representative from the Public Works Ministry, said securing the funds will be one of the toughest challenges to realise as the state budget can only meet about 33 per cent of that need.
However, he is confident that Indonesia would achieve its national targets and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of access to clean water and sanitation for its population by 2015.
Imam said the government will give priority to increasing clean water access for poor and low-income groups and will hold campaigns to raise public awareness of the importance of water conservation.
