The New Enware Water Management System at Sydney Airport Addresses Complex Problems Such as People Not Flushing, Urinal Blockages and Operating with Two Different Types of Water Supplies in Addition to a Low Level of Customer Satisfaction

Installed as part of a major refurbishment at the busy airport, Enware's flushing and monitoring systems are helping the airport management maintain a smarter, sleeker and more hygienic facility for travellers with significant gains in efficiency, hygiene and water conservation.

As part of their general review on maintenance, Sydney Airport conducted a study to better understand their public amenities facilities. Through these reviews, Sydney Airport was able to analyse the faults, identify and manage key issues, as well as establish priorities to target a focused upgrade programme.

The study included cataloguing the age and performance of hydraulic fittings installed at Arrivals and Departures levels; reviewing how the hydraulic fittings were performing since the introduction of the recycled water infrastructure; detailed faults analysis of bathrooms based on maintenance callout frequency; and reviewing customer feedback surveys.

Bathrooms represented a significant percentage of the faults found in the reviews with 80% of those faults related to the hydraulic fittings and fixtures, caused either by age or the amount of traffic in each bathroom. Customer surveys also indicated dissatisfaction with bathrooms compared to the rest of the airport facility.

Regarded as Australia's busiest airport, Sydney Airport received a total of 37.9 million passengers in 2013, or an average of more than 100,000 passengers each day.

According to Mr Stuart Braine, Enware Regional Sales Manager in charge of the Sydney Airport project, the brief for the project required them to address complex problems such as people not flushing, urinal blockages and operating with two different types of water supplies in addition to a low level of customer satisfaction.

Enware solved a lot of these problems using their advanced technology, developed through decades of experience in the industry. Some Enware products were modified to accommodate the challenging demands of T1 and T2 terminals.

Tests indicated the significantly higher usage of some urinals and cubicles over others within the same bathroom. This was resolved by the Enware Water Management System, which allowed water usage to be distributed according to actual usage. This system also gave Sydney Airport the ability to measure, monitor and control all fixtures remotely from a single computer or via their Building Management System (BMS).
