Japanese Tech to Plug Water Leaks in India

To detect water leakage in individual houses and in water distribution pipelines new acoustic sensors near water meters, the first such initiative in the country
The Rs 10-million project for monitoring hidden leaks inside pipelines is being funded by an independent institution of the Japanese government, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
While the water leakage in Bengaluru is pegged at a high of 48 per cent, the leakage in a city like Tokyo is just 5 per cent while the figure is 10 per cent in the whole of Japan.
Japan-based Suidou Technical Service Company and its consultant Mitsubishi Research Institute began work at HRBR Layout 2nd Block from June 29 and continued Thursday.
Acoustic sensors (called L-sign) were installed in 200 households during the four-day drive by four members of the groups. “A total of 90 pipes out of those installed were inspected on Thursday and 10 were found to have leakages,” said Nobumitsu Kimpara, chief engineer of the Yokohama-based Suidou Technical Service Company. The CEO of the company Kenji Oshima added, “Two of the leakages were serious ones. At one point in a pipe, the leakage was three cubic metres per hour.”
Each sensor costs Rs 3,000, but JICA will cover all the costs involved. “The sensors are high-performing, durable devices that will last a minimum of five years,” he said.
“The success of a pilot project undertaken on a 50-km distribution pipeline at Kammanahalli six months ago prompted us to entrust the Japanese groups with the work,” top BWSSB officials said.
The project aims to cover 3,000 home connections across the Bengaluru East-I division within six months, said BWSSB officials. This division encompasses Kalyan Nagar, Banaswadi, Vijaya Bank Colony, OMBR Layout, Ramaiah Layout, HRBR Ist, IInd and IIIrd Block and HBR Ist, IInd, IIIrd, IVth and Vth Block.
