The plant supplies water to roughly half of Metropolitan Manila's population, or 6 million people.

The Japanese company, which is partnering with a local contractor, was awarded the contract by Maynilad Water Services, a government-affiliated water utility. Construction is slated to finish by March 2020.

As Southeast Asian economies continue to grow, demand for domestic water is surging. But many of the region's water purification facilities cannot keep up with demand and often have problems handling the discharge of muddy water during heavy rains.

Japan's advanced water-treatment technology is expected to meet the higher living standards of people in emerging economies.

The current plant was built more than 30 years ago and is in need of repair and increased capacity. JFE's water filtration system will help increase the facility's quality and speed of water treatment.

According to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the water treatment market in Asia is expected to continue growing around 5% a year, and reach 37 trillion yen in 2020.
