Jordan plans number of desalination plants to cope with drought

Jordan is one of the driest countries in the world and climate change looks set to make it even more arid. Plans for a number of desalination plants have been around for several years now but the BBC reported they seem to be comingto fruition.BBC newsreported on Jordan's plans for a number of desalination plants and potential environmental criticisms of the proposals (video footage included in report).Plansfor large-scale desalination have been floating aroundfor years now and involve the extraction of seawater at the Red Sea port of Aquaba. A $15 million World Bank study seems to verify the feasibility of the project, however the first desalination plant alone will cost around $1 billion to build.
