Kenya: Ojaamong, Dutch Seal Deal to Boost Water and Hygiene

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Deal

BUSIA government and the SNV, a Dutch organisation yesterday entered a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene deal.

Governor Sospeter Ojaamong and Wash senior adviser signed the three-year agreement witnessed by Environment executive Bernard Yaite and legal adviser Alex Etyang.

The SNV will address ways to sustain water under the multimillion-shilling project. It will facilitate plans to boost water supply.

SNV will formulate ways to increase funding and boost management of water sanitation services.

It will advise the county government on public-private partnerships.

Governor Sospeter Ojaamong welcomed the move, saying access to clean water is every resident's right.

"It is a big challenge to provide water to our people. We need better policies to guard water services," he said.

He said it is unfortunate that water pipes that were installed in 1960s are still in use.

Ojaamong said the water supply systems need to be rehabilitated to serve the growing population.

"With the growing population, there is increased demand for water," he said.

Ojaamong called for more water funds, saying county budgets are too tight to accommodate many demands by residents.

"This calls for development partners' intervention to address the issue," he said.

Nyakawa said they have rolled out SNV projects in the County to save

residents who do not have access to clean water due to disconnections.

He said attributed water scarcity in rural areas to lack of professionalism in running run water companies.

The quality of water from rivers, streams, water vendors and unprotected springs in Busia is unsafe due to environmental degradation and pollution.

Ojaamong said the county government will come up with a masterplan to strengthen management of water companies and uphold quality standards.
